Plitvice Lakes National Park
It’s no secret Croatia is a country that boasts incredible beauty. We were left awestruck by each place we visited while we were there. However one place stood out to us the most, and that was Plitvice Lakes National park.
Depending on which part of the country you’re visiting, it can be a bit of a drive. From the town of Split it’s around 2.5 hour drive, and from Dubrovnik about a 5 hour drive. I’d highly recommend renting a car for the day, so you can travel at your own pace and stop for photo ops along the way. Alternately, there are busses that will take you to the park if renting a car is not an option for you.
Your best bet is to try and arrive as early as possible to beat the afternoon crowds. It takes a full day and then some to explore the park, so arriving early and wearing appropriate footwear is essential.
There are two park entrances, each on opposite ends of Plitvice Lakes National Park. We went with Entrance 1, which is the most popular entrance. You are immediately greeted by breathtaking views of the Veliki slap (aka the Great Waterfall), which you will want to walk down and view close up during your visit.
As I mentioned, you want to spend most of the day exploring the park. It may look daunting, but boardwalks have been set up all throughout the park, which makes for a leisurely walk. There are also restaurants and concession stands at the beginning and end of the trail, so I’d recommend picking up some snacks and a bottle of water before venturing out.
